Welcome to the Department of Student Residences Affairs (DSRA)
The DSRA strives to ensure listening, living and learning residence communities that are conducive to academic success, personal growth and development through the values of Ubuntu. Residence Life Teams create equitable, inclusive and transformative programmes that support learning environments towards student success. Programs are also provided where students develop their leadership skills to cultivate leaders that are grounded on ethical values, mutual respect and humility. Students are encouraged to support each other academically, socially and emotionally, and to create an inclusive environment where everyone is valued. Shared responsibility is developed to maintain a positive learning environment, peer learning and study groups to support the academic project. Students are encouraged to participate in community engagement projects that promote social justice and equity. In residence communities, cultural exchange is also facilitated for students to interact with other students from different communities. Collaborative learning is promoted, and critical thinking is encouraged. Every effort is made to ensure that students’ residence life experience fosters their holistic development.

- There should be a powder blue numbers that indicate your current year e.g. 2019 or 2020.
- Click on it than it should take you to the last step and save
- Your current year of registration proof of residence should appear on your final screen.
NB: your proof of residence should indicate the current registered year next to OCCUPATIONAL DATE:
In all residences at UKZN you will need to provide your own –
- bed linen (for single bed)
- blankets/duvet
- towels
- iron
- kettle and coffee mug
- study lamp (provide own two-pin-plug)
- Alarm clock (if you don’t want to be late for lectures!)
- cooking utensils
- crockery and cutlery
- FOOD!
- Padlock
- Washing basket
You may also bring the following, subject to certain restrictions:
- portable radio (beware of noise regulations)
- personal computer
- Pets
- Inflammable liquids
- Electric hotplates or paraffin stoves
- Heaters
- Weapons
All rooms are equipped with the following:
- Bed and Mattress
- Desk
- Chair
- Wardrobe
- Noticeboard
- Bookcase / Shelving
- Curtains or Blinds
- Student cards are used to gain access to UKZN campuses and the residences.
- Security guards are posted all around the campuses and at residence entrances.
- There are several emergency intercom boxes around the Pietermaritzburg Campus.
- Security guards are available to chaperone students within the Campus.
- An extensive transport service links all off- campus residences with respective campuses between 07:00 and 23:00 on weekday.
Security is, however, dependent on students playing their part, so it is IMPORTANT that:
- When walking at night on or off campus, do not walk alone – walk with a friend.
- When you leave your room, please lock the door.
- Students are encouraged to insure and to take care of their own possessions.
